Result Interpretation
Nonreactive: Hepatitis B surface antigen was not detected. This does not exclude the possibility of exposure to, or infection with Hepatitis B Virus.
Reactive: This test is a screening tool only. A reactive result indicates presumptive evidence of HBV infection and will be sent to Mayo Medical Laboratories for confirmatory testing.
If the confirmatory test for HBsAg is negative, the initial reactive result may be due to cross-reactive antibodies from other infections or immune conditions. Repeat testing may be recommended later if clinically appropriate.
