Result Interpretation
Negative: Hepatitis B surface antigen was not detected. This does not exclude the possibility of exposure to, or infection with Hepatitis B Virus.
Reactive: This test is a screening tool only. A reactive result indicates presumptive evidence of HBV infection and will be sent to Mayo Medical Laboratories for confirmatory testing. (Hepatitis B DNA Quantitative, RT-PCR)
If the confirmatory test for HBsAg is negative, the initial reactive result may be due to cross-reactive antibodies from other infections or immune conditions. Repeat testing may be recommended later if clinically appropriate.
